In which there is a festivus...
My metier as a filmmaker is documentary shorts. What this means is that I will never make a living making movies, which I’m okay with as I have a great job that supports my creative endeavors and allows me to keep making movies, so long as I can make them for next nothing financially. Which I can. So I’m not making “calling cards” with the hope of being discovered by...
Please Jesus, make it spring now...
…and I’ll cut back on my sinning, I promise.
Detroit’s Comerica Park on January 21, as pictured on Kevin Kaduk’s Yahoo Sport’s Blog, “Big League Stew.” So depressing.

The Empire Strikes Back...
Me: “Because I said so, now please don’t ask again.”
D (my almost 4-year old son): “But why, Daddy?”
Me: “Because I’m your father.”
D: “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” [followed by uncontrollable laughter that eventually fades into an impish grin] “That’s what Luke Skywalker says, Dad.”
Let’s just say my...

In which the timing finally works out...
After more than a half decade of near misses, in March I am finally going to see the Drive-By Truckers in concert. Better yet, it’s also going to be a college reunion of sorts that will happen in a major metropolitan area. This bodes horribly for my liver, but oh so sweetly for my soul.
brightcandle asked: What are your thoughts on the film Catfish?
Modern Family, "Our children, ourselves."
“Honey, I think we should go see this movie.” “Why do I have to watch a French movie, I didn’t do anything wrong?
This comes from an exchange between Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) during the “Our Children, Ourselves” episode of Modern Family. I think the second season has been a lot more hit and miss than the first, but this episode...

In which Bedford Falls woos me...
This is my backyard, as seen through my dining room window. It’s looked like this more often than not for the last two months. Christ.
As should be clear to anyone who ever reads this thing, I’m going off my rocker here in Bedford as I feel like I’m choking under the oppression that comes with the dark and gray winter here. Fortunately, I’m off to a film festival,...

In which I am really missing living in Hong...
Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor, as seen from the Peak during January of 2010.
Sweet Jesus, but I need to get out of Bedford Falls. It’s been so cold for so long here and there’s been snow on the ground more often than not since before Thanksgiving. It’s just been a brutal stretch and I haven’t been out of town since the middle of October and I’m going more...

Easy A and The Town Redux...
I’m adding Easy A to the shortish list of movies I thought were pretty good this past year. I missed it in the theaters but just had a chance to watch it. It’s well-written and all the references to 80s’ teen movies are certainly in my wheelhouse, as are the loose parallels with The Scarlet Letter. It’s not as successful or interesting as Clueless or 10 Things I Hate...

Was 2010 the worst year in Hollywood history?
Yesterday I was out for a walk to clear my head, which gets cleared pretty quickly in 10 degree weather. As I’m wont to do on these occasions, I was listening to the latest podcast of Extra Hot Great, which is a show I adore; it’s funny, insightful, and treats popular culture with the smartness it deserves, thus further obliterating the high/low cultural divide, which I’m all...
