In which there’s a special delivery…
Washington state has the most expensive liquor in the United States, not to mention the worst selection. This is because the state runs the booze business, which means I have to go to a state store that not only has scant offerings, but terrible hours as well. It’s only been in the last couple of years that the liquor store has been open on Sundays, and even then it’s only for a few hours. It’s unconscionable. I want every supermarket in town to have great liquor selections, just like in my glorious motherland, California. Lo and behold, Washington voters just passed Ballot Initiative 1183, which has removed the state from the liquor business. We voted the bast**ds out! Unfortunately prices won’t much change as the exorbitant taxes will remain largely intact so as to go to social programs and blah blah blah. But it’s highly likely that the selection issue will become moot, and this makes me beyond happy. Except for the gap. The law doesn’t take effect until June 1st. Enter my sister and her companion, who have come to Bedford Falls for Thanksgiving, making the long drive from California. The following conversation took place prior to their departing for Bedford:
Sister: Hey Johnny, is there anything we can bring you from California?
Me: A liquor store….
Sister: Seriously, what do you want?
Me: Um, seriously, a liquor store…
They arrived last night. This is what my kitchen table looked like shortly after their arrival. Happy Thanksgiving, indeed!
