“I think we are, indeed, in a new golden age of television. I think TV today is, pound for pound, storytelling-wise, is more interesting—there, I say it—than Hollywood movies. And I think it’s because television is first and foremost about storytelling. When you create a TV show what you hope is that by the virtue of the writing, by virtue of the actors you’ve cast, or the situations the characters find themselves in, are so interesting, so dramatic and perilous, that you want to keep coming back for more.”
Breaking Bad creator & showrunner Vince Gilligan, from “The Crusader,” Part 4 of PBS’ America in Primetime. I’ve seen 75 or so movies in the theater this year (so far) and really enjoyed seeing maybe 25 of them, and of those 25 there’s probably not more than 7 that I actually think are really good movies. Conversely, I see 25 great TV episodes a month, and that’s being incredibly judicious with my time and DVR choices. As Gilligan says, he’s biased because he makes his living in TV so you have to take his opinion with a grain of salt, but that doesn’t mean he’s not dead right.
