“You can’t make a great movie by accident. It just does not happen. There are too many decisions that a director has to make over too long a period of time, so when somebody’s made a great movie I would bet on that person. When somebody has made more than one great movie, then they’re a great director.”

Matt Damon telling The Business’ Kim Masters why he agreed to star in Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo.  I’m fascinated by how much controversy the Auteur Theory generates in academia and how little pause it gives those who actually work in the industry.  In any case, when you write the screenplay for Fast Times at Ridgemont High and write and direct Almost Famous, Say Anything, and Singles, then missteps be damned—you are indeed a great director AND writer.
