Rest in peace, Lane Pryce (Jared Harris), as you’ll be sorely missed. This shot is from Signal 30, in which the absurd fist fight between Lane and Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) instantly became my favorite Mad Men moment ever. So many people I know can’t stress enough how much they HATE Pete Campbell, but I would argue that their detestation is proof of how well the character is written and how fantastically played he is by Kartheiser. In fact, I fear Kartheiser is so good at the role that his post Mad Men career will suffer as he’ll always be seen as Pete Campbell. Hopefully that won’t be the case, as I’d love to see what someone so talented can bring to other roles. In any case, with one episode still to go, Season Five is also my favorite season to date. So rich, so detailed, and such a sense of dread permeating every episode all season long. Has there every been another drama with so many richly drawn characters? I don’t think so.
